FLY CASTING BASICS #2 - The Stance

In any sport where a ‘hand-held’ tool is used to propel ‘something’, there are two keys that set the platform for success, i.e. the Grip and the Stance. Fly-casting is no exception. A good grip complements a good stance.
The Stance: Even before holding the rod, the way an angler stands will have a dramatic impact on their overall casting. The most effective fishing stance for New Zealand’s rocky rivers and faster waters is illustrated in the following photos.

Feet should be positioned just inside shoulder-width apart, with the angler’s weight forward, directly over the opposite foot to the casting hand. This foot and the angler’s ‘belt buckle’ should then be pointing directly along the intended line of cast.
Tip: Too much weight on the back foot will result in dropping the back-cast, while incorrect placement of the feet will limit consistent accuracy.
