Service Description

Whether you are a neophyte, or an angler with limited experience and looking to brush-up on your skills, this course will teach you the basics of fly fishing and provide a platform for future personal fly fishing development. The course is structured over two x 2 hour evening classes, plus one x 2 hour morning session (learning the fundamentals of fly casting). Class size is restricted to a maximum of 8 anglers. Module One: Thursday 21st August: 7 - 9 pm Module Two (Flycasting): Sunday 24th August: 9 - 11 am Module 3: Tuesday 26th August: 7 - 9 pm Course Content • Aim of Course: To introduce new anglers to the basic principles and practises of fly fishing for trout. Students will: 1. Learn what is appropriate equipment as well as where and when to use it. 2. Develop a basic understanding of the habits and habitat of trout and the insects they feed on. 3. Learn how fly fishing attempts to exploit this knowledge to help enable trout to be caught. 5. Understand how to handle trout safely and the conservation ethic of Catch-and-Release. Subject areas: Module #1: Thursday 21st August: 7 - 9 pm • Philosophy of Fly Fishing. • Categories of Fly Fishing. • List of equipment – Essential / Useful. • Rods, Lines and Leaders. • Knots and Rigs. • Understanding your quarry. Session #2: Sunday 24th August: 9 - 11 am • Fly Casting – Introduction and Self Assessment. Session #3: Tuesday 26th August: 7 - 9 pm • Insects – Basic entomology. • Principles of Choosing the Appropriate Fly. • Basic Stream-craft Theory: - Where to find trout - How to spot trout - How to approach and cast to trout - How to hook, play and land trout • Principles of Safe Trout Handling and Catch-and-Release DATES, TIMES AND VENUES: This course will be based out of Richmond, Nelson. Thursday 21st, Sunday 24th and Tuesday 26th July 2025. Sessions 1 & 3 ... 7pm - 9pm Nelson-Marlborough Fish & Game, 66-74 Champion Rd, Richmond. Session 2 (Casting) ... 9am - 11am Champion Green, Saxton Fields (opposite the Velodrome, behind Garin College) PAYMENT: You will be invoiced 10 days prior to the course.
